River Parishes at D.C. Mardi Gras
Louisian's River Parishes, New Orleans Plantation Country, presided over the 2011 Washington D.C. Mardi Gras Weekend, themed "The Mighty Mississippi." King Glen Smith and Queen Leah Elizabeth Aucoin, welcomed Louisiana delegates and conferred honorary Louisiana citizenship on guests from a variety of states.
The event was a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on the River Parishes and how the Mississippi River influenced much of what makes the area a unique tourist destination today. For more details, please click here.

River Road designated as a National Scenic Byway
The "Great River Road" that runs through New Orleans Plantation Country has been designated a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Department of Transportation. There are only 120 of these roads designated throughout the entire country. To be designated, highways must offer at least one of six intrinsic qualities - historic, cultural, natural, scenic, recreational, or archaeological. Louisiana's designation was based primarily on its historic qualities. Oak Alley Plantation, Houmas House Plantation & Gardens, San Francisco Plantation, and Laura: A Creole Plantation are among the tourism sites located along the Byway. Additionally, Oak Alley Plantation’s iconic image is being used on the roadside Byway markers.
